What is Overselling?
You may have heard that a hosting company practices overselling, and you may have even unknowingly witnessed it yourself without even knowing there\'s a term for it.
Overselling is the solution many companies use to offer a lot for a low price. The hosting company creates plans with features that, if all its customers decided to use them 100%, the system couldn\'t handle.
A common example involves disk space. Imagine a company offers 40GB of disk space and sells the plan to 100 people even though the actual available space is only 200GB. That is, while 400GB are supposedly available, in reality, only half is actually usable. What\'s the theory behind this? Most websites don\'t even use a gigabyte of space, so they offer a very tempting deal that they won\'t actually use. Obviously, the problem arises when someone does it!
This term is closely related to the well-known overbooking practice of airlines, which sell more tickets than the plane\'s actual capacity, based on the idea that some customers will always fail to board.
Normally, there aren\'t problems with these hosting services, but one of the sites you share the server with might use a lot of CPU resources, either because it uses a content management system (CMS) or because its site becomes popular. If several of your server neighbors have these characteristics, the server can slow down and become a problem.
Why are some VPS and Hosting services cheaper and others more expensive?
Strictly speaking, it\'s a matter of marketing. If you\'re getting quotes for a VPS or Hosting service, the one that offers more resources for the same price or a lower price is probably more attractive. Competition between different companies in the market leads to this phenomenon (which is quite unfortunate, by the way).
When choosing between different plans or companies, it\'s advisable to be realistic about your service or website\'s resource usage. If you need more resources in the future, you can simply request an upgrade.
The saying \"you get what you pay for\" is well-known, and it certainly applies here. As a company, we have a policy of providing the resources we actually offer at a competitive (and fair) price, and we take our work with our clients seriously.
