When loading Instagram on its web version, the message "Server Error 5xx" appeared, while the app did not allow users to search for users, upload photos, view stories, check messages, and other applications. While the app was accessible on Facebook, the incident was less frequent than on Instagram and WhatsApp.
"We are aware that some people are experiencing issues accessing our apps and products. We are working to get back to normal as soon as possible and apologize for any inconvenience," Facebook reported via Twitter.
The last such situation occurred on June 9, 2021. However, this Monday's outage—which also occurred in the context of a new edition of CyberDay—is one of the longest-running and was reminiscent of the one recorded on WhatsApp in February 2014, when it went down for 12 hours as part of its acquisition by Facebook.
Users turned to social media platforms: Telegram and Twitter. Another interesting metric from the day was the word WhatsApp, which was repeated more than half a million times on Twitter. On a more serious note, it is estimated that the service outage resulted in an immediate loss of $6.6 million for Mark Zuckerberg, although the effects on the stock market will likely become visible on October 5.
