Chile will have Starlink satellite internet services

This is the Starlink project, which consists of a constellation of satellites to provide low-latency, high-speed broadband internet. The pilot program will be implemented in the north, in Caleta Sierra in the Coquimbo Region; and in the south, in Sotomó, in the Los Lagos Region.

The goal is to improve quality of life and connectivity, with access to online classes, telemedicine, and e-commerce through the Undersecretariat of Telecommunications (SUBTEL), an entity that will work with the pilot projects promoted by the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications (MTT) in conjunction with Starlink.

The launch of Starlink comes after the MTT, through SUBTEL, studied the technical feasibility of conducting social pilot tests in rural and/or isolated communities with digital connectivity problems. To this end, the company was granted an experimental permit for non-commercial use of the service.

To implement this connection in the localities, the company provided satellite kits that will provide free internet service for one year. It was agreed that after the year, the cost will be covered by the municipalities. In addition to the pilot projects, Starlink and SUBTEL intend to add service to new rural areas and soon expand its reach throughout Chile.

Starlink is a company owned by South African businessman Elon Musk and will launch the first satellite internet operations in Chile, making it the first country in Latin America to implement this type of technological innovation.
