One of the measures taken by its competitor, TikTok, was to make the profiles of underage users private. Making these profiles private creates a protective barrier around the user, as they can accept or deny follow requests, and their profile will not be easily accessible to any other user.
This is not the only measure Instagram will adopt. Accounts reported by minors will be automatically blocked and prevented from interacting with other accounts belonging to teenagers. This measure is more drastic and will prevent contact from people whose behavior is inappropriate with minors.
Instagram's new measures are being applied to newly created accounts by underage users, although existing accounts will also be advised of everything that comes with having a private account. Both Instagram and TikTok seek to create a safe place for their users, especially those under the age of majority.
