Google introduces its new Topics tool

Cookies are text files belonging to each user that allow advertisers to collect information about their tastes and web browsing habits in order to deliver personalized advertising. Google is seeking to abandon this old browsing system and make way for one that doesn't use these cookies. And the new alternative to replace FLoC is Topics.

The company's main idea has been iterating for a long time and has been controversial from the start. This Tuesday, they shared all the information regarding the new updates the tech giant will be implementing through their official blog.

"Today we are announcing Topics, a new Privacy Sandbox proposal for interest-based advertising. Topics was based on our learnings and widespread community feedback from our previous FLoC trials, and it replaces our FLoC proposal," the company explains.

What is Google Topics

What Topics will begin to offer is the use of your browsing history over the past three weeks to determine each user's online interests. To begin, approximately 300 topics will be analyzed. The goal of this new implementation is to establish new tools for the advertising market. Therefore, Google will use Topics to analyze the topics that have caught your attention the most in recent days, based on your browsing habits.

“With Topics, your browser determines a handful of topics, such as "Fitness" or "Travel & Transportation," that represent your top interests for that week based on your browsing history. Topics are retained for only three weeks, and old topics are deleted. Topics are curated entirely on your device without involving any external servers, including Google's servers,” the text explains.

The company had made several attempts to finally change the cookie system, using FloC, which was criticized by other browser companies. After this, the replacement for Topics is already in the development stage, and users will have the option to delete topics and add new ones.
