What is a VPN?
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a networking technology used to connect one or more computers through a private network. They are currently gaining popularity because they guarantee anonymity while browsing the internet.
Data security is becoming increasingly important, especially as data privacy is facing controversial questions. Many people in Western countries, where there is seemingly greater freedom of expression, are choosing to protect their personal information from governments and private entities that conduct malicious surveillance.
Especially now, as the pandemic has strengthened communication channels and access to information, technology has become even more important in our daily lives. Knowing this, internet service providers seek to control or limit access to certain information or services.
VPNs are very popular in countries where individual freedoms are restricted and censorship makes publishing or even visiting certain websites risky. A VPN allows you to browse freely and without restrictions, from watching regionally blocked content like Netflix or YouTube, to bypassing firewalls in work environments, and connecting to untrusted Wi-Fi networks such as those in airports, internet cafes, or universities.
VPN and how it works
A VPN establishes a secure connection between the remote user (you) and an external network. It acts as an intermediary, encrypting or encoding the information transmitted between the two channels. Thanks to this intermediary, it\'s possible to hide information from the external network, providing false information to the internet provider about the connection established by the users.
By hiding your personal information and redirecting traffic, it makes it impossible for a provider or network to track your information, unlike a normal connection where you are exposed.
There are free VPN services, but as the saying goes, nothing is free, the VPN provider may have malicious intentions or sell your data to third parties, which makes it even more dangerous.
Using a VPN is completely legal and not prohibited in Chile.
